10 Types of Staircases That You Can Find Today

Staircases have been a part of the architecture for a long time. It was used to go from one floor of the room to the other. But in the modern times, the staircase has a different purpose. It is considered as a decorative element inside your home. While still serving the purpose of moving up and down different floors, it has become more of an aesthetic feature of the house. There are many types of staircases available today. Here we are going to discuss some of them.

Straight stairs

These stairs go straight from one floor to the next without any change in direction. There are many variations in straight stairs. You can find straight run with just one flight between the floors or straight run with multiple runs between the floors. There are some straight stairs that have a change in direction in between flights. Angle stairs and scissors stairs are such stairs. The straight stairs are very simple and convenient. You can use it for various purposes. Other than going up and down the stairs, you can use it to carry things from one floor to the next. However, as it only has a single flight, these stairs cannot be that long. You won’t be able to have more than 16 stairs with this type of staircase.

Quarter turn or L-shaped stairs

In this type of stairs, the flight direction is altered by 90°. You can have a quarter space landing or have winders. This is a common type of stairs that you will see in many buildings.

Half turn or U-shaped stairs

These stairs are similar to the quarter turn stairs, but these change direction through 180°. There is a landing between stairs. There are two variations in this type of stairs: open newel type and dog-legged. In the former one, there is an opening in the middle of the flights. But in case of the latter one, there is no space between the flights. You can see half-turn stairs in many office buildings.

Three-quarter turn stairs

The direction of these stairs changes by 270°. You get an open well. Construction of this type of stairs is similar to the L-shaped stairs; it only varies in angles.

Spiral stairs

In this type of stairs, the radius of curvature is smaller than the circular stairs. There may be a center post or pole to support the stairs. From the top, it looks like a perfect circle. The staircase has narrow treads and so people who are a little clumsy may find it difficult to go up or down the stairs. If you have space constriction then you can consider building this type of stairs as it takes up very little space.

Winding stairs

These stairs look like a circle with one center of curvature. These are mostly seen at the back of the building. These stairs turn by 900° or 1800°. There are single winder stairs and double winder stairs as well. You can build these stairs out of cast iron, stone, etc.

Geometrical stairs

These stairs are in the form of geometrical shape. You can use winders to get a change in direction of the stairs. It is quite difficult to build these stairs compared to the other types of stairs.

More than just angled stairs, these designs have geometrical patterns from triangles to pentagons, etc.

Curved stairs

Unlike the circular stairs, these stairs have more than one center of curvature. It looks like an eclipse.There is no landing in this type of stairs. The stairs take a continuous pattern.

Bifurcated Stairs

In this type of stairs, there is a wide flight at the beginning. Then at the mid-landing position, the stairs are further divided into narrow flights. These are often seen in modern buildings. You will find this type of stairs often in the movies. The movie Titanic might remind you of this type of stairs. This type of stairs splits off in the middle and two smaller flights go in the opposite directions. This type of stairs has become an integral part of many modern houses today.

Arched stairs

The flight of these stairs is similar to that of an arch. The treads of this type of stairs are wedge-shaped. These stairs look very elegant. Construction of these stairs is very difficult.

The construction of some of these stairs may be difficult. You should choose the type of stairs according to the function, design, usage, and cost. For example, you cannot have a spiral stair in the middle of the house where all your family members will be using this stair to go up and down to get reach another floor.
